Brief summary
Peter Sweeney was born c1837 in Quebec and died before November 1893. He married c1867 Jane McInnis, born May 1, 1850 to John McInnis* and Maria Clark of Nelson Parish, Northumberland County. Peter and Jane were living in Nelson Parish in 1881. In 1891 they were living in Newcastle where Peter was a sawmill labourer. Peter was Roman Catholic, whereas Jane and the children, who were all born in Nelson Parish, were Presbyterian. After Peter’s death Jane married Thomas Dempsey, a widower from Belledune. In 1901 Jane and Thomas were living in Newcastle, along with the four youngest Sweeney children and one Dempsey child, Ethan.

(1) Rachel Born May 18, 1870 Chelmsford; died August 14, 1939 in Nelson Parish. On October 6, 1894 at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, Newcastle, she married Anthony Shannon**, son of Thomas Shannon and Jane Elizabeth Dempsey of Nelson Parish. Anthony was born March 18, 1872 in Belldune, Gloucester County, N.B. and died in Nelson on December 13, 1952. They had at least nine children. Rachel and Anthony were buried in Malcolm Cemetery, St. Patrick R.C. Church, Nelson.
(2) Susan Born June 9, c1873 Chelmsford. On May 27, 1889 in Newcastle she married Henry Judson Tozer, born February 29, 1862 to William Tozer and Charlotte Parker of Sillikers. Judson and Susan had at least four children. In 1901 Susan gave her religion as Presbyterian, whereas the rest of the family was Baptist. Judson was a farmer. He died June 12, 1939. Susan’s death has not been recorded in N.B. Perhaps she died in the U.S.
(3) Ida May Born August 4, 1876 in Chelmsford; died in Brooklyn, New York. On November 26, 1892 she married George Milton Black, born December 4, 1870 to Hugh Black and Jane Firth of Newcastle. They were Church of England. Milton was a teamster. They lived in Brooklyn, N.Y.
(4) Jemima Born c1880 in Chelmsford. She married Ben Manning and lived in California.
(5) Catherine J. Born c1881 in Chelmsford. She remained unmarried and lived in Massachusetts

(6) Sara-Beatrice Born March 3, 1883 in Chelmsford. She remained unmarried and lived in New Jersey, U.S.
(7) Isaac Charles Born May 24, 1886 Chelmsford; died April 18, 1963 Newcastle. On October 18, 1905 in Newcastle he married Mary Jane Lynch, born April 1, 1880 to James Lynch and Johanna Doyle of South Nelson. Jane died August 9, 1952 in Newcastle. Isaac and Jane were buried in Malcolm Cemetery, Nelson.
(8) Marshall J. Born December 24, 1889 in Chelmsford; died August 9, 1949 in Newcastle; buried in Malcolm Cemetery, Nelson. On April 11, 1913 he married Matilda Clara Olsen, daughter of Daniel Olsen and Elizabeth Boyle. They had three children. Matilda was born November 7, 1894 and died November 11, 1918 in Chatham. She was buried in St. Michael’s R.C. Cemetery, Chatham.
(9) Jennie F. Born March 28, 1891 in Chelmsford. She married a Manning and lived in Massachusetts.
