Dr. James Fraser KEAYS, M.D., C.M., husband of the late Frances [STICKLEN] KEAYS, of Miramichi, NB passed away at his residence on Wednesday, March 22, 2006 at the age of 89. Born in Matapedia, PQ, he was the son of the late William D. and Lillian J. [FRASER] KEAYS. Dr. KEAYS received his early education in Matapedia, Port Daniel, and Quebec City; a BA from Mount Allison University in 1937 and a BSc from Dalhousie University in 1939. He graduated from Dalhousie University Medical School in 1943, enlisted in the Royal Canadian Medical Corp and was posted over seas during WW II. He commenced a General Practice in Newcastle in 1946 where he proudly served the community until his retirement in 1990. Dr. KEAYS was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 17, F & AM, 32nd degree Scottish Rite of Perfection of Free Masonry; member of the Miramichi Shrine Club; Past Medical Officer of the Shrine [NB Branch]; Life Member of the Royal Canadian Legion; member of the NB Highland Society at Miramichi; Past Honorary President of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch # 10 Newcastle; past president of the Medical Staff; Miramichi Hospital, and for many years the Secretary of Staff at the Miramichi Hospital.
He is survived by his children: Jamie [Lezlee-Ann], of Lunenburg, NS, Beth KEAYS, of Halifax, NS, and Claudia KEAYS [Perry KEATING], of Miramichi, NB; two grandchildren: Ewan and Olivia KEAYS; sisters-in-law; Margaret STICKLEN, Mary Lou [Ian] McCLURE, Jean [Warren] HALL, and Jeanne and Adelle KEAYS.
He is predeceased by two brothers: Dr. Claude F. KEAYS and Bryce F. KEAYS; and brother-in-law, Edward [Bud] STICKLEN.
There will be no visitation. The funeral service was held on Saturday, March 25, at 2 pm from St. James and St. John United Church, Miramichi, NB, with Rev. David Tuck officiating. Organist, David Bunnell was assisted by the church choirs. Congregational hymns were: This is Gods Wondrous World, Spirit of Gentleness and How Great Thou Art. Piper was Robert GALLIAH. Readers were Robert McClure and Laura Addison. Burial will take place in Miramichi Cemetery later in the spring. Memorial may be made to the IWK Childrens Hospital or Miramichi Regional Hospital Foundation. Funeral arrangements were under the care of Bells Funeral Home, 651 King George Highway, Miramichi, NB Telephone 622-3600.
