Basil Mac AKERLEY, 84, of Auburn, died Saturday at Sebastacook Valley Hospital, Pittsfield, after a brief illness. He was born in Newcastle, NB, on July 16, 1913 a son of George and Dora [FLOWERS] AKERLEY and was a 1933 graduate of Edward Little High School. During World War II, he served in the Navy as a member of the construction battalion. Prior to retiring last year, he worked for many years and in many capacities for the Auburn School Department, including being a well known and liked bus driver.
His first wife, Helen-May GIBB, died in1953; and his second wife, Eleanor MALLAY, died in 1985. A son, Gard died in 1974. He was predeceased by seven sisters and five brothers.
Surviving are five sons: Leland, of South Portland, Blaine, of Lewiston, Russell & David, both of Auburn, and Kendall, of Bar Harbor; a daughter, Mrs. Raymond [Susan] AKERLEY-DICKINSON, of Stetson, three step-granddaughters: Mrs. George [Joyce] HEUSSIER, of Litchfield, Mrs. David [Ida] GREENLEAF, of Gardiner, and Mary CHAPUT, of Auburn; 28 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.
Visiting held 5-9 pm Tuesday at Dillingham and Son Memorial Chapel where a funeral will be held at 1 pm Wednesday. Spring burial will be in Mount Auburn Cemetery. Donations preferred to the Baisl Akerley Scholarship Fund in care of Fleet Bank, Auburn.
