SGT. RAY YOUNG DIED OF WOUNDS RECEIVED ON D-DAY<br /> <br /> Mr. and Mrs. John YOUNG, Minto Street are receiving the sympathy of many friends following official notification from Ottawa on Friday that their eldest son, Sgt. Raymond W. YOUNG died in hospital in England on June 28th, as a result of wounds received in action. Sgt. YOUNG was wounded on the first day of the invasion of France, receiving shrapnel wounds in the legs, hips and arms twenty minutes after he landed on the beach. Two hours later he was shot through the right eye. On June 8th, he was removed to hospital in England, where he was reported seriously ill on June 10th and where he later had his eye removed. On Tuesday of last week official notification came that he was dangerously ill. Letters written by Sgt. YOUNG himself from the hospital and dated June 14th and 17th were received by his mother and brother, Frank, on Saturday. He told them in these letters that he was coming along fine.<br /> <br /> The first telegram received by Mr. and Mrs. YOUNG on June 11th advising them that their son had been wounded was the first news of the D-Day casualties to be received in Chatham. Sgt. YOUNG enlisted in July, 1940 as medical sergeant with the North Shore (NB) Regiment and went overseas in July 1941. He was a graduate of St. Thomas High School and also completed one year in arts at St. Thomas College after which he entered the late J. D. B. F. MacKenzie’s drug store where he remained for eleven years. When this business was taken over by W. J. C. Scott, he continued in his employ until his enlistment a few months later. He was a certified drug clerk.<br /> <br /> Ray was deservedly popular in his home town. He was a well-known hockey player and also played basketball. He was a member of the North Shore (NB) Regiment Hockey Team which won the 3rd Canadian Division Hockey Championship in England in 1942. Sgt. YOUNG was 31 years of age.<br /> <br /> He is survived by his parents; two brothers, Leo, of the CNR, Newcastle, residing in Chatham and Frank, certified drug clerk with W. J. C. Scott, residing at home.<br /> <br /> A Requiem Funeral Ms was celebrated for the repose of his soul in St. Michael’s Church Monday morning at seven o’clock by Rev. J. M.
