The death of W. Stafford ANDERSON, of Newcastle, occurred in Miramichi Hospital on Friday, March 28. Born at Burnt Church on February 16, 1884, he was the son of William and Janet [SEWELL] ANDERSON. He was educated at Burnt Church, Chatham Grammar School and Saint John Business College. Mr. ANDERSON was a member of St. Davids United Church, Burnt Church and a long time adherent of St. James and St. Johns United Church, Newcastle, a member of Northumberland Lodge No. 177 and AM and the Highland Society. He had been in the lumbering business for many years. When he moved to Newcastle in 1924, he purchased the former Canadian Gear Works which became the Anderson Manufacturing Company. He was also president of the W. S. Anderson Company established in 1908. He also established mills in Newfoundland and Chipman. In June 1930 he was first elected to the NB Legislature and continued to serve until his retirement in 1956. From 1935-1938 he was chairman of the NB Electric Power Commission in the Honorable A.A. Dysart Cabinet. Mr. ANDERSON held the post of minister of public works from 1938-1952. He was president of the Canadian Good Roads Association and a few years ago was honoured as the Doyen of Past Presidents by the Roads and Transportation Association of Canada. Mr. ANDERSON was a commissioner of the NB Electric Power Commission from 1960-1966. He was a life member of the Northumberland Liberal Association. His long experience in public life and business caused his advice to be sought on many questions. Until recently Mr. ANDERSON enjoyed good health and was active in business and the affairs of the Liberal party.
His wife the former, Huldah MORRISON, of Burnt Church, whom he married in 1910, predeceased him two weeks ago.
Surviving are four sons: Brig. General Ernest ANDERSON, of Fredericton, J. Burns ANDERSON, of Toronto, W. Royce ANDERSON and Keith ANDERSON, of Newcastle; three daughters: Senator Margaret ANDERSON, of Newcastle, [Shirley] Mrs. H.E.P. WILSON, of Burnt Church, and [Mary] Mrs. Robert D. SAGE, of Toronto; 16 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
The remains rested at his residence, 139 Pleasant Street, Newcastle, until Monday morning, March 31, when they were taken to St. James and St. John United Church where a service was conducted at 2 p.m.
The funeral was conducted by Rev. D. Woods assisted by Rev. D.F. Hoddinott and Rev. B. DeLong. Wayne Hubbard was organist and hymns were: The Lords My Shepherd and O Love That Will Not Let Me Go.
Pallbearers were six grandsons: James ANDERSON and William ANDERSON, of Moncton, John ANDERSON and Scott SAGE, of Toronto, Keith WILSON, of Ottawa, and Eric ANDERSON, of Camp Gagetown.
The remains were placed in the receiving vault in Miramichi Cemetery to await burial later. Among those attending the funeral were Hon. Hugh John Fleming, Fredericton; K.C. Irving, Bermuda, and son, Arthur Irving, Saint John; Robert Tweedie, Richard Malloy and Beau Hagerman, of Fredericton, Maurice Dionne, MP, and local members of the Legislative, the Mayor and town councillors of Newcastle.
