FUNERAL OF THE LATE ARCHIBALD ALCORN
Large Number at Last Obsequies at Blackville Yesterday
The funeral of the late Archibald ALCORN Sr. took place yesterday afternoon from his home in Blackville commencing at two o’clock.
The late Mr. ALCORN was a member of the Miramichi Lodge, F & AM and the funeral was under Masonic auspices. Over fifty members of the Miramichi Lodge, Chatham, Northumberland Lodge, Newcastle gathered to pay their last tribute of respect to the memory of a deceased Brother, and the little town of Blackville turned out on masse to attend the obsequies while friends and acquaintances drove from miles around. The day was wet and lowering, but a large number gathered at the house and the procession formed for the Presbyterian Church shortly after two o’clock the hearse being followed by the mourners and pallbearers and then the rank and file of the Lodges with the general public bringing up the rear.
At the Church a Solemn Service was conducted by the Pastor Rev. Mr. Beaton, the church being crowed to the doors. In his discourse the Reverend gentleman dwelt strong and eloquently upon the many manifold virtues of the deceased: his attendance at public worship, his sterling uprightness throughout a long business career and his consideration and regard for others. Among the hymns was a favourite of the late Mr. ALCORN’S: Come to the Mercy Seat.
At the conclusion of the service the large congregation filed past the raised coffin, taking a last look at the face of one dear to them. The remains were borne to the church yard where the solemn Masonic Ritual was carried out under the direction of Worshipful Master H. B. McDonald of Miramichi Lodge. Many beautiful wreaths and other floral tributes covered the casket and were heaped upon the grave. The Chatham and Newcastle brethren made the journey in autos, about twelve cars being used to convey them to and from Blackville.
