ONE-TIME RIVER CAPTAIN PASSES -
The death of Charles Spurgeon AMOS, of Newcastle, occurred in the Miramichi Hospital, on Thursday, following an illness of several months duration. He was 86 years of age. He was born at Upper Nelson, son of the late Malcolm and Jessie [MacKAY] AMOS and was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was formerly a captain of several Miramichi River boats, and later was employed by George Burchill & Sons of South Nelson for more than 11 years, retiring about 13 years ago. He was a long time member of Northumberland Lodge No. 17 F. & A.M.
Mr. AMOS was twice married; his first wife, the former Ethel PRICE, of Rogersville, died 13 years ago.
Surviving are his wife, the former Mrs. Susie STEEVES; five sons: Price, of Powell River, B.C., Ernest, of Newcastle, Bliss, of Dunville, Ont., Sterling, of Oakville, Ont., and Don, in California; a daughter, Mrs. Harry STEWART, of Chipman.
The remains rested at his late home on George St., until Sunday afternoon when a family service was held at 1 oclock, after which they were taken to the United Baptist Church, where funeral service was conducted at 2:30 oclock by the Rev. D.I. McClare. Interment was made in the Miramichi cemetery.
