SAD DROWNING ACCIDENT ON SUNDAY AFTERNOON - Ronald Allison, 18, Went Through Ice While Skating on Miramichi River - <br /> A sad drowning accident occurred on Sunday afternoon near the French Fort Cove, on the Miramichi River, at the eastern limits of Newcastle. The victim was Ronald Blair ALLISON, son of Mr. and Mrs. James ALLISON, of this town. The tragedy spread a gloom over this community where Ronnie was well known and a favourite with everyone. A student at Harkins High School he was in his final year and would have completed his industrial course in June next. The sympathy of the community is extended to the parents and members of the family in their tragic loss. - <br /> WITNESSED DROWNING - Ray Morrissey, Nordin, taxi driver, and Mr. Clarke, of Millbank, a passenger, were hailed by Mrs. Lionel Richard to give assistance to a man who broke through the ice and who was struggling to pull himself out. The doomed man could be seen by Morrissey and Clarke as they rushed to the river bank, on their arrival at the shore they saw the man disappear below the surface. At this time his identity was unknown. The rescue squad of the local fire department responded to the alarm. Grappling operations were carried out throughout the night and until Monday afternoon when the body was recovered by residents of the area who conducted the rescue by tieing themselves together with ropes and dragging a boat along over the dangerous thin ice. Tommy Matheson, Charles Matheson, his son, Barry, Sandy Sutherland, Ray Reynolds and Percy McCormack, formed the party. <br /> Dr. E.H. Freeman, coroner, decided that an inquest was not necessary after receiving a report from the RCMP who investigated the accident.<br /> A large number of skaters were enjoying this popular past time on Sunday afternoon along the banks of the Miramichi River. Young ALLISON had left home in the early afternoon for a skate and as word of the drowning became known, coupled with his disappearance from his home, grave fears were held by relatives and friends that he was the victim. The father identified the body after it was recovered on Monday.<br /> The funeral was held on Wednesday afternoon from his late residence, Mitchell St., at 1:30 oclock. Services at the house were conducted by Rev. D.F. Hoddinott. Harkins High School teachers and students marched in a body and they formed a guard of honour at the High School. The funeral proceeded to the English Settlement United Church, Trout Brook, where services were conducted by Rev. Mr. Amy, assisted by Rev. D.F. Hoddinott. Interment was made in the English Settlement cemetery. <br /> The pallbearers were: Kenneth SHEPHARD, Hyson SUTHERLAND, Clarke JEFFREY, Merle McDONALD, Louis LEGER, and Jerrold WHITE.<br /> Source: newspaper clipping - December 16, 1949 [courtesy the collection of Janice Malley]
