ENGINEER OF TRAIN SAYS WOMAN SAT DOWN BETWEEN TRACKS<br /> Just after leaving Bathurst Saturday noon, the South-bound Ocean Limited struck and killed Gertrude YOUNG, 24, of South Bathurst, who was walking along the right of way. The accident occurred at a point between Middle River railway bridge, leading to Little River. The train was drawn by Engine 6118, with Engineer John Tweedie, of Moncton at the throttle, and Conductor Lucien Melanson in charge.<br /> The train was brought to a stop and investigation revealed the body was terribly mangled. It was taken to Elhatton Brothers Undertaking Parlors and identification was not made until evening.<br /> When struck and instantly killed, the woman was sitting between the railway tracks. Engineer John Tweedie said in a statement to Dr. J.C. Meahan, coroner: When approaching the Bathurst spur line about seven car lengths distant, I saw a woman on the track and I blew the whistle, said Tweedie. She walked to one side of the track and back again to the opposite side, where there was a snow bank. I thought she was going to clear, but she came back and sat down in the middle of the track.
