A Chatham woman, Mrs. Charles McLEAN, 46, of17 John Street, was killed early Thursday evening, October 15 when her car left the highway two miles south of Allardville and struck a telephone pole.
Mrs. McLEAN, who was alone in the car, was pronounced dead at the scene. She had been driving along Highway No. 8 and proceeding towards Bathurst when the accident occurred at approximately 6:30 p.m.
The Bathurst detachment of the RCMP, which investigated, said no other cars were involved and that visibility at the time was poor. Gloucester County Coroner Dr. R. D. Hennessy of Bathurst ordered an autopsy. No decision was announced regarding an inquest.
Born in Chatham, she was the former Ada SMITH, daughter of the late Joseph and Mary [JARDINE] SMITH. She was educated at St. Michaels Academy and was employed at the Hotel Dieu Hospital, Chatham.
Besides her husband, she is survived by two sons, Mark, of Kitchener, ON, and Peter, at home; two daughters, Mary and Susan, both at home; three brothers, Frank, of Hampton, Fred and Harold, at Chatham, three sisters, [Mary] Mrs. James A. CURRIE, of Chatham, [Kay] Mrs. John ALLAN, of Pinehurst, Mass., and [Ginnie] Mrs. Warren ALLEN, of Montreal.
The funeral mass was celebrated on Sunday afternoon at St. Michaels Church by Rev. Donald Breen with Rev. Leo Sullivan, Very Rev. A.L. McFadden and Rt. Rev. R. M. Hickey in the sanctuary.
The pallbearers were: Alden DALEY, Jeffrey SAVOY, Bernard BRENNAN, Art LEGGATT, Peter FLYNN and Herbert LeBLANC.
