14-YEAR-OLD DIES IN TRAGIC FIRE
It will be a sad Christmas for the Adrian McINTYRE family of Baie Ste-Anne. Last Saturday morning, 14-year-old Debbie McINTYRE died in a fire, which completely destroyed the family home. Christmas wont mean anything to me this year, said Leontide McINTYRE, mother of Debbie. I only want my little girl back. Debbie was alone in the McINTYRE home when a fire broke out shortly after 10:30 a.m. Fifteen minutes later, the house was destroyed. It happened so quickly, said a neighbour. One minute I looked out the window, and the next minute the houses walls were falling down.
LEFT FOR MONCTON -
Mr and Mrs. McINTYRE had left for Moncton earlier that day. Debbies brother and sisters left at 10:20 a.m. to catch a glimpse of Santa at Als Playpen in Baie Ste-Anne. She was eating breakfast when we left, said a sister. At 10:30 she phoned her girl friend, and thats the last anyone heard of her.
Twelve members of the Chatham Fire Department responded to the call. When they arrived at the scene, 35 minutes later, the house was completely destroyed. Icy roads deterred them from arriving earlier. Firemen then spent three hours hosing and sifting through ashes in the basement of the house before the body was recovered. Cause of the fire has not been determined. The investigation is continuing. The house was electrically heated.
GRADE SEVEN STUDENT -
Debbie was a grade 7 student at the Baie Ste-Anne public school. An active and outgoing person, she participated in many sports. She was in air cadets and really loved that, said Mrs. McINTYRE. She wanted to see how flying was before she made any plans about the Armed Forces.
Debbie is survived by her parents; two sisters: Donna, 17, and Lise, 10, both at home; two brothers: Adrian Jr., 15, and Robert, 2; also at home; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Felix MARTIN, of Baie Ste-Anne; and paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred BARRY, of Baie Ste-Anne.
The funeral service was held yesterday afternoon from the Baie Ste-Anne Roman Catholic Church. Fr. Gauthier presided. The Baie Ste-Anne Air Cadets served mass and held an honour guard.
Pallbearers included six cousins: Jerry MARTIN, Jack MARTIN, Alvin Jr. McINTYRE, Dale McINTYRE, Albert MARTIN, and Oswald MARTIN.
Entombment was made in the parish vault to await burial in the spring.
The family is currently residing at Alvin McINTYREs residence in Baie Ste-Anne. Mrs. McINTYRE expects her husband will build a new home in the spring. Our home was only four years old; it was practically brand new, she said. The McINTYRE family lost everything in the fire, including all Christmas gifts. Relatives have asked social assistance for help.
