YOUTH DROWNS AFTER FALLING FROM BOAT -
The Miramichi River claimed another life yesterday afternoon when 20-year-old Joseph Leo ALLAIN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar ALLAIN, of Newcastle, fell from a small boat and drowned. The tragic mishap occurred at approximately 3:30, near the Irving Oil Company wharf at Newcastle. Young ALLAIN was in a small outboard motor-boat with a companion, Ian WILT, also of Newcastle, when he apparently fell over the side. ALLAIN was in the rear of the boat, while WILT was sitting at the front. WILT was unaware that his chum had fallen into the water until an observer shouted to him from a boat docked at the wharf.
It was not known last evening whether or not ALLAIN was a swimmer, but it was reported that he was wearing very heavy boots that day. Newcastle firemen and members of the RCMP immediately began grappling operations, and the body was recovered within an hour.
In addition to his parents, ALLAIN is survived by his two grandmothers: Mrs. Joseph ALLAIN, of St. Charles, and Mrs. Gappy SAVOIE, of Fair Isle; two sisters; Leona and Lorraine, both at home; one brother, Albert, of Newcastle.
Northumberland County Coroner Dr. E.H. Freeman has called an inquest. No date has yet been set for the inquest, and funeral arrangements will be announced later.
