THREE DIED IN CRASH
A highway crash early Sat. afternoon at Chatham took the lives of three Baie Ste. Anne residents. Mrs. Guy [Elva] SAVOIE, 33, was the driver of a car which was struck by a truck carrying a load of granite.
Those who died as a result of the accident were: Nadine SAVOIE, 2 ½, daughter of the driver; Mrs. Mina MARTIN, 69, mother of the driver; and Mrs. Cecilia SAVOIE, 71, mother-in-law of the driver.
Injured were Elva SAVOIE, the driver, and her daughter, Pauletta, 12. They were taken to Hotel Dieu Hospital in Chatham.
The family had driven from Baie Ste. Anne to go shopping in Chatham. The car was believed to be making a left turn from the Bridge Road to University Avenue to reach the shopping centre. Coming up the highway from the Centennial Bridge was a truck loaded with rock. The truck struck the auto at the intersection. The driver of the truck, Napoleon LeBlanc, of Cap Pele, was not injured. The car, a 1976 model was demolished. The truck, also a 1976 model, was also badly damaged. Chatham police investigated the accident.
NEAR ANNIVERSARY OF EARLIER FATALITY -
Mrs. Guy [Elva] SAVOIE, driver of the car involved in an accident Sat., had obtained her driving permit only a couple of weeks previously. The accident, Oct. 2, was only three days from the anniversary of the previous fatality. On the day Mr. and Mrs. SAVOIE were married at Baie Ste. Anne 13 years ago, there was a parade. While cars were following the bridal party, one vehicle went out of control and Oran McINTYRE, brother of the bride, was killed.
Mrs. Cecilia SAVOIE, 71, who died in the accident Sat., had attended the funeral of her brother, Edmond S. MARTIN, 79, the previous evening. Mrs. Cecilia SAVOIE is survived by her husband and five children and several grandchildren.
Mrs. Mina MARTIN, whose husband died 23 years ago, is survived by 10 children and several grandchildren.
THIRD ACCIDENT -
The accident on Sat. was the third in which Pauletta SAVOIE, 12, had been involved. At Fredericotn in 1971, she was unhurt but the car in which she was a passenger was demolished. Seven years ago, she was crossing the road and suffered a broken leg.
Guy SAVOIE was lobster fishing off Kent at the time of the accident. A relative drove to Escuminac and called Mr. SAVOIE on the shore-to-ship wireless.
Mrs. Elva SAVOIE was released from hospital Monday evening. Pauletta, 12, was in hospital recovering from cuts and bruises.
