Brief summary
MCKAY, HUGH, born c 1788, St. Mary’s Parish, York Co, NB, the 3rd son of Robert McKay, Jr., formerly of the 42nd Highlanders and Barbara McCloud. He married Elizabeth Beckwith, daughter of Ichabod Beckwith and Susannah Whitney, about 1810 in NB. Hugh was not especially successful in business or significantly involved in local affairs. He died 18 February 1840 in Newcastle, NB in his mid 50’s.

Susannah, born c 1812, Strathadam, believed died before 1851, married 1st Jeremiah Crowley on 25 April 1833 in the RC Church, Nelson. The son of Jeremiah Crowley, he was born c 1814 in Ireland and died c 1838 in Strathadam. 2nd William Johnston, son of James Johnston and Mary Bell on 16 April 1840 at Johnston’s Bridge, NB. He was baptized 15 August 1805, Scotland and died 15 June 1875, Sunny Corner, NB. There was one child with Jeremiah Crowley and two maybe three children with William Johnston. The family lived on the farm at Sunny Corner, NB.
Margaret, born c 1813, Strathadam, died after 1896, married Robert Johnston, son of James Johnston and Mary Bell on 13 March 1843 in North Esk, NB. He was baptized 31 January 1815 in Scotland and died after 1898 in North Esk. They raised their family of 6 on the farm at Red Bank, NB. They are probably buried in St Stephen’s (old) Cemetery, Red Bank, NB.
Robert, born c 1816, No Co, died 14 February 1898, Strathadam, married Margaret Johnston about 1850. She was born c 1816 and died before 1881. A farmer, Robert and Mary raised their family of 6 children at Strathadam, NB.
Oliver, born c 1817, died 31 January 1909, married Isabelle Masson on 8 July 1852 in Newcastle, NB. She was born 1832 in Aberdeen, Scotland and died 29 September 1894 in Northwest Bridge. A log sawyer, Oliver and Isabelle raised their family of at least 10 at Northwest Bridge, NB. Oliver and Isabelle are buried at St. James & St. John United Cemetery, Newcastle, NB.
Ichabod, born c 1820, Newcastle, married Elizabeth Norrad on 25 September 1857 in Ludlow, NB. She was born 6 November 1833, St. Mary’s, York Co, NB and died 2 April 1934, Stanley Parish, York Co. They raised their family of 10 children in Hayesville, NB.
Daniel Whitney, born Mar 1822, Strathadam, died young about 1843.
Mary M., born c 1825 at Strathadam, died 12 March 1879, married Alexander Johnston, son of James Johnston and Mary Bell, on 13 September 1842 at Sillikers, NB. He was baptized 4 November 1812, Scotland and died 4 June 1893. A farmer, Alexander and Mary raised their family of 4 children in South Esk, NB.
Sarah, born 24 Aug 1826, Strathadam, married James Johnston, son of James Johnston and Mary Bell, on 30 October 1848 in Red Bank, NB. He was born c 1824 in Red Bank and believed died after 1891. A farmer/lumberman, James and Sarah raised their family of 6 in Sillikers, NB district.
Jane, born 28 August 1829, Newcastle, died between 1871 and 1881, married John T. Atkins on 1 September 1870 in No Co. He was born c 1839 in England and died after 1881. They were living with Jane’s brother Robert in 1871.
Barbara, born c 1832, Whitneyville, married James Matchett, son of William Matchett and Mary Fraser, about 1851. He was born c 1829, Sunny Corner and died 1860, Sunny Corner, NB. The family settled on their farm at Sunny Corner, but after James’ early death the family was broken up. Barbara died 18 March 1906 in Red Bank, NB. There were five children.
George, born Dec 1836, died 17 October 1906, married Mary McLean, daughter of Alexander McLean and Huldah McKay, on 3 December 1867 in No Co. A farmer, George and Mary raised their family of 9 children in Strathadam, NB.
Sarah Jane McKene, born c 1845, is shown in the 1861 census, age 16, as adopted daughter, living with Elizabeth (Beckwith) McKay and son George in North Esk, NB.
Date of Arrival: Hugh McKay’s name dates from 1810 in North Esk when he purchased part of Lot 4 at Strathadam from his brother George.
