1794-1878<br /> GILKS, JOHN: Married Agnes Nancy Moore, daughter of David & Hannah Moore, in the Parish of Blissfield on 2 April 1839, by Justice of Peace, Squire Robert Doak. John & Nancy settled in Blissfield. There he saw the need for a school and built the 1st school, calling it “Upper New Salem” after a name in England. He taught the students until he found a professional teacher.

James, born 1841, Blissfield, died 1909. Married Myria Sutherland on 6 August 1863 and they had 8 children. When she died in 1881 with Black Diphtheria along with 3 of their children, he married Catherine Hambrook and they had 3 children. James was a shoemaker and they also ran a hotel in Doaktown. There is a headstone for James and Myria in the Old Anglican Cemetery, Doaktown.<br /> <br /> Peter William, born 1843, Blissfield, killed in a train accident. Married Hannah Clancy on 23 June 1855. They had 4 children.<br /> <br /> John Leverett Jr., born 1846, Blissfield, killed in a sawmill in Maine. Married Emeline Grass. They had 4 sons.<br /> <br /> Emeline Rebecca, born 1848, Blissfield. Married David Ward, son of George & Hannah (Arbo) Ward on 28 January 1866. They had 8 children.<br /> <br /> Zacharias, born 18 April 1852, Blissfield, died 18 January 1929, Blissfield. Married Mary Charlotte Astles (1851-1933), daughter of David & Catherine (Sullivan) Astles. Zacharias and Charlotte are buried in Blissfield United Baptist Cemetery. They had 11 children.<br /> <br /> Martha Jane, born 1855, Blissfield. Married Chester (Charley) Beek. They resided in Doaktown where they raised their 7 children.<br /> <br /> Mary Ann, born 18 Feb 1859, Blissfield died 14 August 1939. Married Alexander Valentine Mitchell. He was born 14 February 1845 and died 22 May 1934. Mary Ann & A. Valentine are buried in Mitchell Cemetery, Doaktown, NB. They raised a family of 6.<br /> <br /> Cornelius, born 17 May 1858, Blissfield, died c 1882, age 24. Married Margaret McRae. They had 4 children.<br /> <br /> Date of Arrival: Arrived in Canada from England as a young man.
