ENGLISH, BRIDGET: was married to George English. George is believed to have died in Ireland before Bridget came to Canada with her three sons and a daughter. Four other daughters had previously emigrated here in 1836. Bridget was born about 1782 in Ireland and died 11 December 1868 in Nelson, NB. The family was Roman Catholic. Bridget’s tombstone was located at Malcolm Cemetery, St Patrick’s Church, Nelson, which was erected by her son Michael.

Ann, born about 1811 in Port Laoise, Ireland. She arrived in Northumberland Co in 1836. On 8 August 1841 she married Thomas Rattigan in Nelson Parish. They lived in Nowlanville and raised four children.
James, born about 1816 in Port Laoise, Ireland and came to Canada in 1844. A daughter, Susan, was born in 1846 and was raised by her grandmother, Bridget English. James married Bridget Foley on 11 August 1847 in Nelson Parish. She was born 10 September 1826 and died 6 July 1901, the daughter of Peter and Eleanor (Kaine) Foley. They had 10 children.
Sarah, born about 1819 in Port Laoise, Ireland. She arrived in Northumberland Co in 1836. In 1851 she was working as a servant in Chatham in the home of Thomas H. Peters. She never married. Sarah died on 7 April 1907. Sarah is buried alongside her mother at Malcolm Cemetery.
Elizabeth (Eliza) was born about 1819 in Port Laoise, Ireland and arrived in Canada in 1836. She married Thomas Noonan on 19 June 1843 in Nelson Parish. Eliza died 15 August 1845. They had two children. Eliza is buried in the English family plot at Malcolm Cemetery.
Mary, born about 1823 in Port Laoise, Ireland and came to Canada with her mother and brothers in 1844. She married Maurice Scully on 14 February 1848 in Nelson Parish.
Michael was born about 1824 in Port Laoise, Ireland and came to Canada at the age of 20. He married Catherine Murphy on 22 November 1859 in Nelson Parish. She was the daughter of Marcus and Mary (Synnott) Murphy, who were among the earliest pioneers of Nowlan Settlement. Michael died 1 October 1908 and Catherine died 6 months later on 13 April 1909. Both are interred at Malcolm Cemetery, St. Patrick’s RC Church, Nelson, NB. Michael and Catherine had 9 children. Catherine also raised another son born to Michael, who arrived shortly after they were married.
Martin was born about 1827 in Port Laoise, Ireland and came to Canada in 1844. At age 21 he was working as a servant in the home of Thomas H. Peters in Chatham. He may not have married. Martin died 19 July 1858 and is buried in Malcolm Cemetery, St. Patrick’s RC Church, Nelson, NB
Bridget, also born in Port Laoise, Ireland, came to Canada in 1836. She married Philip Quinn on 21 April 1854 in Nelson Parish.
