Brief summary
Stephen Sherwood was born (date unknown) in the United States, probably in Westchester County, N.Y. or Fairfield, Connecticut. He was married and had most of his family in the U.S. His wife’s name and those of his parents are unknown. The family settled on the S.W. Miramichi where he bought a lot from William Davidson. On July 16, 1784 Stephen received a grant and settled in Derby Parish. D.G. Bell listed Stephen Sherwood as a farmer from Dutchess County, N.Y. His family included two adult females, two children over 10, and three children under 10 when they landed in Saint John, N.B. in June 1783. They had travelled with a company of other Loyalists on the ship ‘Littledale’. Stephen died in Derby Parish in 1823.

Discription of the issues related to this individual
(1) Mary Born c1770 in the U.S.A. She married David Newman, the son of John H. Newman and Hannah Montgomery. David was born December 21, 1774 in the U.S.A. and died June 16, 1852 in Derby Parish. They had two children.
(2) Esther Born c1776 in N. Y.; died probably in Hogdon, Maine. On September 13, 1796 she married Moses Whitney, the son of Ebenezer Whitney and Huldah Mooers. Moses was born c1772 in Sheffield, N.B. and died in the 1850’s in Hogdon, Maine. The family lived in North Esk until the 1830’s. They had eight children.
(3) Sarah She was not mentioned in her father’s will and might have died before 1823. She married George Peabody, son of Samuel Peabody and Molly Hildrick, born 1778 in Maugerville and died December 1852 in North Esk. They had four children, and they were Baptist.
(4) William Born c1781 in N.Y. He married Desire Leach, daughter of Thomas Leach, Sr. of Northumberland County. They lived at Red Bank, then Halcomb, before relocating to Old Town, Maine in the 1840’s. They had six children.
(5) John Born c1790 in N.B.; died after 1861. On November 7, 1816 he married (1) Elizabeth Murphy, daughter of James Murphy and Margaret Pottle from Newfoundland. They had two sons. Elizabeth died before 1828. John married (2) Mary Cleveland McKenzie, widow of John Murdoch McKenzie, on October 23, 1828 in Nelson Parish. John and Mary had one child, Elizabeth.

(7) Phoebe Mentioned in Stephen’s will. No further information found.
