Brief summary
James M. Kelly was born before 1798 in Belfast, Ireland. James M. Kelly emigrated from Belfast, Ireland, to N.B. in 1798. He settled in The Bend of the Petitcodiac (now Moncton). In 1839 he obtained a contract from the N.B. government to operate a mail stage between Miramichi and Moncton. Later, he added mail and passenger coaches between Miramichi and Moncton. He died on November 5, 1844 at Newcastle and his eldest son, William Moore Kelly, took over his stagecoach business.

(1) William Moore Born c1825 in Moncton, N.B.; died on December 12, 1888 in Montreal, Quebec. He married (1) Elizabeth Ann Long, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. James Long of Cocagne, Kent County, N.B., on October 26, 1847. Born c1824, she died in 1856. He married (2) Margaret Fraser (born c1834), daughter of Alexander Fraser* and Katherine Fraser, married August 11, 1857. Margaret died July 4, 1895. They were buried with William’s first wife, Elizabeth Long, and their four sons in St. Paul’s Anglican Church Cemetery, Bushville (Chatham Head). William was active in politics (MLA) and in business.
(2) Daughter Born between 1825 and 1839.
(3) Jerushia Born December 7, 1830 Moncton; died after 1901. On January 18, 1850 she married Robert Orr who worked with William. Robert was born July 4, 1827 and died after 1901. They moved to Fredericton before the 1851 census was taken, by which time they had an infant daughter. They also had two boys. Robert was a mail driver for William’s business.
(4) Joseph Born June 10, 1833 in Moncton; died December 23, 1905, Black River, Northumberland County. On March 26, 1877 he married Sarah Jane McLean, born September 12, 1856 to Hugh McLean and Jane McLeod. She died September 14, 1943. They had at least five children. They were buried in St. Stephen’s Community Cemetery, Black River.
(5) Robert Born about c1835 in Moncton. Not in Northumberland County census records after 1851.
Note: No wife of James M. Kelly has been identified; however, all five children were born in Moncton prior to the move to the Miramichi area.
