James Holmes was born December 1799 in Port Glasgow, Scotland. He and his brother John came to the Miramichi, followed later by his parents, James and Margaret Holmes. James erected the first schoolhouse in Halcomb. He died on October 24, 1859 at Halcomb. Margaret died August 4, 1910. (1) Elizabeth Born April 25, 1825 at Halcomb. On October 19, 1842, she married Robert Thomas (Holmes) (c1815-November 9, 1895). They raised fifteen children in Halcomb. She died December 13, 1902.<br /> <br /> (2) Margaret Born February 1, 1826/7 at Halcomb. She married (1) James Casey, son of James Casey and Margaret Tobin and had four children. She married (2) Edmund Peter Clark, the son of Edmund Clark and Jane Rogers, on September 3, 1859 and had a family of six. She died on August 4, 1910 at Strathadam.<br /> <br /> (3) Jane Born c1828 at Halcomb. On October 15, 1850 she married John Somers (born c1828), son of John and Abigail (Tozer) Somers of Lyttleton. John and Jane had seven children. Jane died on May 14, 1888 in Lyttleton. They were Baptist.<br /> <br /> (4) William Born April 16, 1830 at Halcomb; died June 11, 1913. He left the Miramichi at the age of seventeen and worked in lumber camps in the US for several years before settling and marrying Augusta Chandler. They had several children. They were Presbyterian. William was a successful businessman.<br /> <br /> (5) James Born May 18, 1834 at Halcomb. On August 3, 1868 before leaving N.B., he married (1) Mary Burns (born c1848), the daughter of William Burns and Elizabeth Matchett. About 1892, he married (2) Jane Carr in Menominee, Michigan and had several children. He died on November 2, 1920 in Menominee<br /> .<br /> (6) Agnes Born August 4, 1836 at Halcomb. On July 21, 1856 she married Edward Chambers, the son of Patrick Chambers and Joanna Saunders. They raised a family of five at Halcomb, where she died on October 1, 1914. They were Presbyterian.<br /> <br /> (7) John Born February 19, 1839 at Halcomb. On March 3, 1862 he married Elizabeth Johnston, the daughter of Thomas Johnston and Catherine Hall of Red Bank. About 1891 they left Halcomb and moved to Menominee, Michigan. They had nine children.<br /> <br /> (8) Joseph Born c1841 at Halcomb. On August 9, 1866 he married Mary “Polly” Mullin (born c1846), the daughter of Alexander & Elizabeth Keating, and they had eleven children. Joseph died January 1, 1892 at Boom Road. <br /> <br /> (9) Mary Born July 12, 1844 at Halcomb; died April 18, 1921. She married George Loggie on September 11, 1879. She was living at Lyttleton as a widow in 1914. <br /> <br /> (10) Peter Born February 28, 1847 at Halcomb. <br /> <br /> (11) Isabella Born January 28, 1850 at Halcomb. On July 27, 1869 she married Duncan McTavish (March 31, 1843-October 16, 1909 Cassilis), son of John McTavish & Marion Sinclair of South Esk. Duncan died May 9, 1883 at North Esk, and Isabella died on March 19, 1939. Duncan and Isabella had nine children. They were buried in St. Stephen’s (New) United Church Cemetery, Red Bank.<br /> <br /> Note: According to the 1901 Census, Mary’s birth date was November 21, 1846.<br /> <br /> Note: According to Willis Hamilton (below), Peter married a woman by the name of Antoinette and was still living in 1900.<br /> <br /> <br />
