William Hay was born in Annan, Scotland in 1792 and died at Escuminac in 1873 at the age of 80. He and his wife, Mary, arrived in New Brunswick c1823. She was born in Scotland in 1797 and died July 27 1831. Following the death of Mary, he married Margaret McGregor on January 17 1833. She was born c1809 and died April 18, 1852. They were buried in St. Andrew’s Cemetery, Chatham.

Children of William Hay and Mary:
(1) William Born c1815 in Scotland; died after 1856. He was a blacksmith and was married to Margaret Gillis, born c1816, on March 4, 1845. They raised six children in Chatham.
(2) James Born c1829 in Scotland; died December 31 1837 at the age of 17.
(3) John Born c1823 in N.B. and was a blacksmith. He was married January 11, 1845 to Ellen Spence, born c1826, who arrived from Nova Scotia in 1844. They moved to Fredericton.
(4) George Born c1825 in N.B.; died June 11, 1891; buried St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Cemetery, Chatham. He was a blacksmith. On October 12, 1853 he married Hanna Stewart who was born December 26, 1832. They had at least one child.
(5) Janet Knox Born c1831; died March 13, 1831. She was buried in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Cemetery.
(6) Janet Born c1831; died January 27, 1846, aged about 14 years.

(7) Elizabeth McGregor Baptized June 21, 1835; died October 5, 1857, aged 22.
(8) Helen Baptized June 21, 1835; died October 17, 1836, aged 4 months.
(9) Peter Baptized November 12, 1837. He became a ship’s engineer and drowned on duty September 18 1871. He was buried with his family in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian, Chatham.
(10) Margaret Baptized February 9, 1840; died 1887.
(11) Ellen Born December 19, 1841. She married Charlie Wilson, a native of Sweden. He was born c1837.
(12) Jane Born February 4, 1843.
(13) James Born April 15, 1846. He was married to Mary Ann Paul.
(14) Alexander Born June 15, 1846; died 1928. He was married to Esther Jackson October 21, 1879. She was born 1858 and died 1944.
(15) Mary Jane Married Arthur Breau on May 24, 1886.
Note: The burial plot at St. Andrew’s includes a Jane, d. July 30, 1868, aged 39, wife of William Hay.
