Brief summary
Martin Flanagan was born c1809 in Athlone, County Westmorland, Ireland and arrived in Canada as a young man. He married Mary Deagan, born 1808, on March 4, 1832 in Bartibogue, Northumberland County. They settled and raised their family in Laketon, south of the county line with Kent. Martin and Mary kept a roadhouse for the travelling public on the highway between Chatham and Richibucto, Kent County. Martin died November 23, 1874 and Mary, April 2, 1879. Both were buried in the cemetery of St. Margaret’s Roman Catholic Church which is in Northumberland County.

(1) George Born c1833; died October 7, 1854, aged 21; buried St. Margaret’s.
(2) John Born c1834; died March 12, 1919, aged 85. On September 24, 1860 he married Katherine Dunn, c1839-April 28, 1910. They raised ten children in St. Margaret’s.
(3) Mary Born July 2, 1836; died February 9, 1907 Kouchibouguac, Kent County. She married Michael Hackett, c1829-June 8, 1872, and raised five children. They were buried in St. Margaret’s.
(4) Catherine Born September 10, 1839; died 1928. On August 12, 1867 she married Thomas Keating, 1842-1902. They raised ten children. Thomas and Catherine were buried in St. Michael’s R.C. Church Cemetery, Chatham.
(5) Martin Born c1840 in Laketon; died January 15, 1909. On April 29, 1879 in Westmorland County he married Sarah Jane Hamilton, born c1850 in Moncton. They lived in Richibucto where Martin was a merchant and a farmer. Sarah Jane died, aged 62, on August 13, 1918 in Montreal.
(6) Julia Born c1841; baptized October 6, 1841 in St. Louis, Kent County; died February 21, 1918 in Moncton. On April 8, 1872 in Moncton, Julia married John Sutton, August 27, 1832-September 23, 1903. They raised four children in Moncton. They were Roman Catholic.
(7) Roger Born February 14, 1845 in Laketon; died March 11, 1921. He married (1) on September 25, 1871 Ellen Keating of Chatham. Born 1845, she was the daughter of John Keating and Ann Burns. Ellen died November 12, 1883 at the age of 38. Roger and Ellen had four children. He married (2) in 1885 Mary (Molly) Henry, born c1854 in Sherbrooke, Quebec, to John Henry. She died September 4, 1909, aged 55, in Boston. Roger was a well known businessman in Chatham.
(8) Patrick Born c1848 in Laketon; died January 14, 1900 in Laketon. On June 19, 1876 he married Mary Fitzgerald, daughter of Edward Fitzgerald and Marcella Lynch. Mary was born August 5, 1857 in Glenwood, Northumberland County and died May 29, 1949. They had thirteen children. Patrick and Mary were buried with some of their children in St. Margaret’s R.C. Church Cemetery.
(9) Thomas Born c1850 in Laketon; died July 15, 1908, aged 58. On September 25, 1878 he married Agnes “Alice” Henry, born 1856 and died September 26, 1897, aged 39. Thomas and Agnes raised six children. Thomas was a retail merchant (store on Cunard St., Chatham) and hotel owner-operator of Adams House as of 1886. After a fire that destroyed the building in 1899, he built a new Adams House. Thomas and Alice were buried with five of their children in St. Michael’s R.C. Church Cemetery, Chatham.
(10) James Born October 20, 1853; died 1925. On January 7, 1873 he married Elizabeth Catherine Graham, born November 16, 1851 to Robert Graham and Mary Jane Graham. James and Elizabeth raised nine children in Richibucto, Kent County. Elizabeth died October 29, 1934 and was buried with James in the cemetery of St.-Antoine-de-Padoué Roman Catholic Church, Richibucto.
Note: Roger Flanagan had been a retail merchant in Chatham for more than thirty years. For many years he managed the Adams House Hotel, which was owned by his brother Thomas. In 1903 he entered the hotel business full time when he leased the Bowser House from his brother. In 1903 he was among the twelve men selected as a committee of management for the construction of St. Michael’s Cathedral in Chatham.
