CHAPLIN, WILLIAM: born 15 September 1791 in Bridgton, ME, USA and died 13 August 1858 in Cassilis, NB, Can. He was one of three sons of John Chaplin and Margaret Chaplin who ended up marrying local Miramichi girls and settling along the river. He came to NB with his parents and stayed when they returned to Maine. He states he entered NB in June 1810 on the 1851 census.
He purchased Lot R at Cassilis from Donald Ross in 1815. According to an entry in a Family Bible, William married Helen Walsh in 1810 in No Co. The daughter of James Walsh and Ann Martin, she was born about 1787 in the Red Bank area and died 1 October 1878 in Cassilis, NB. William became very active in the community and was a prosperous farmer and lumberman. Helen is buried in St. Thomas RC Cemetery, Red Bank, NB. No headstone has been found for William.

William, born 1816, Cassilis, died 13 December 1870 in Bangor, ME, USA. He married 1st Elizabeth Ellen Wright on 2 August 1838 in St. Patrick’s RC Church, Nelson, NB. She was born about 1820 in South Esk Parish and died between 1858 and 1867 most likely in the Bangor, ME, USA area. Married 2nd, Margaret u/k on 4 September 1867 likely in Bangor, ME, USA. While in NB, William was a lumberman and held several minor parish offices in North Esk. He moved his family to the Bangor, ME area shortly after 1847. William and Elizabeth had eight children.
Daniel, born 1818, Cassilis, NB and died 10 July 1884 in Ramey, Clearfield Co, PA, USA. He married Margaret Ann Flynn, daughter of John Flynn and Avisia Kingston, on 8 July 1851 in St. Patrick’s RC Church, Nelson, NB. She was born 13 October 1827, Wayerton, NB area and died 19 November 1907, Houtzdale, PA, USA. The family lived in Cassilis until 1869, when Daniel transferred his Cassilis property to his brother Joseph and then moved to Cambria Co, PA where his wife’s family had extensive lumbering operations. The family was living in Gulich, Clearfield Co, PA in the 1880 census. In it Margaret states her parents were born in Ireland. Daniel and Margaret had seven children, with only six still at home in 1880.
George Washington, born about 1821, Cassilis, NB and died about 1903 in Altoona, PA, USA. He married Avistia (Anastasia) Flynn, daughter of John Flynn and Avisia Kingston, on 8 January 1856 in St. Patrick’s RC Church, Nelson, NB. She was born about 1835, probably in the Wayerton area and died 1889 in Belsens, PA, USA. Until the mid 1860’s, they lived in Cassilis when they moved to Pennsylvania, USA. They had ten children, the first five being born in Cassilis.
May Ann, born 15 June 1822, Cassilis, NB and died 15 September 1905, in Penobscot Co, ME, USA. She married Hector James Morrison, son of John Morrison and Ann Lee, on 2 October 1855, No Co. He was born 29 January 1821, Red Bank, NB and died 31 March 1906, Penobscot Co, ME, USA. They had one child born to them in NB before they moved to Maine.
Margaret, born 14 July 1825, Cassilis, NB, died 1898. She married Robert Purdon on 4 January 1844, No Co, NB. The family lived on the Northwest Miramichi, where Robert owned and operated a sawmill, known as Purdon’s Mill. Margaret and her three young children were enumerated in the 1851 census in North Esk but were gone by 1861.
Ellen, born 13 December 1830, Cassilis, NB and died 26 February 1934, Cassilis. She married Jeremiah O’Sullivan on 4 November 1847 in St. Patrick’s RC Church, Nelson, NB. He was born about 1815 in Ireland and died after 1882 in Cassilis. The family lived in Cassilis, where Jeremiah was a shoemaker. They raised two adopted daughters.
Joseph, born April 1834, Cassilis, NB and died 6 September 1899, Cassilis area, NB. He married Eliza Dunn, daughter of William Dunn and Bridget Findlay, on 22 February 1859, St. Thomas RC Church, Red Bank, NB. She was born 26 January 1934, Red Bank and died 5 March 1920 Cassilis area, NB. Joseph was a farmer and lumberman in the Cassilis area. They had three children. Joseph and Eliza are buried in St. Thomas RC Cemetery, Red Bank, NB.
