Brief summary
Richard Burbridge was born c1790 in Whistleton, Cottingham, Northamptonshire, England and died June 30, 1866 in Chatham, N.B. He joined the Royal Eastern Regiment of Middlesex on December 15, 1811 in Portsmouth, England. In 1814 he enlisted as a private in the 95th Regiment of Foot (later known as the Rifle Brigade) stationed in Belfast. He was successively appointed to the ranks of Corporal and Sergeant. He served three years in France and was wounded at the Battle of Waterloo. Afterwards, he served six years in North America, where he received his discharge February 27, 1832 on account of good conduct. While still in the military, Richard became a member of the Masonic Lodge. Indenture 305 at the Registry office in Newcastle, N.B., dated July 5, 1836, shows that Richard bought some property in Chatham from Francis Peabody and his wife Lydia. The property was located at the northwest corner of the intersection of King and Howard Street. On June 30, 1839 the property was sold to William Houd.

Children of Richard Burbridge and Jane Shank:
(1) Samuel Parr “George” Born April 25, 1835. He married Mary Ann “Anna” Harris on January 28, 1861. She was born c1833 and died March 9, 1904. George died March 27, 1889 in Napan, N.B. and was buried in St. Paul’s Anglican Church Cemetery. They had five children. George was a sexton at St. Mary’s (Anglican) Chapel of Ease.
(2) John Born 1836. He was a tinsmith. In 1861 census he was 22 years of age and living with his parents in Chatham. He was not found in any census after 1861.
(3) Thomas Born c1840. He was found only in the 1851 census.

(4) Mary Jane Born August 18, 1841; baptized October 17, 1841. She married (1) William Galloway on June 30, 1864 and had two children. William was a plasterer. He was born c1842 in Charlottetown, P.E.I. and died February 12, 1868 in New York. Mary Jane married (2) Simon Ross on November 13, 1871. Simon was born in 1837 and died in 1898. They had seven children. Mary died January 1, 1928 in Moncton. Simon and Mary were buried in Riverside Cemetery, Chatham.
(5) Richard Born November 3, 1843. He was a fisherman and a tinsmith. In 1881 census he is noted as a fish preserver. He married (1) Jane McLean on November 16, 1867. They had two children. Jane died in August 1870, aged 28 years 6 months. Richard married (2) Sarah Jane Hewson on August 23, 1871. She was born in England. There were 13 children of this marriage. They were not found in the 1891 census for Northumberland County. This family was Church of England.
(6) Philip Henry Born in Chatham on March 31, 1846; baptized on October 25, 1846. He married Margaret Ann Chapman on June 3, 1872. Born c1851, she was the daughter of James Chapman* and Ann Goodfellow. Margaret died on July 29, 1929 in Chatham. There were eleven children. Henry Burbridge died on November 29, 1914. They were Presbyterian and were buried in Riverside Cemetery, Chatham.
(7) William James Born c1847; baptized January 23, 1848. In the 1881 census he was married to Nancy_________ born in New York and they had four children. He was a plasterer. William and Nancy moved to the U.S. and lived in Teney Heights, New Jersey. They were Church of England.
(8) Joseph Born c1849; baptized February 24, 1850. He married Annie McMullen on December 3 1878. They had two children. Joseph died in 1927, aged 76, and was buried in East Bathurst, N.B.
(9) Susan Born c1850; baptized November 30, 1850. In the 1871 census she is living at home and employed as a seamstress. No marriage records have been found, and she was not in the 1881 census.
(10) Sarah Born in 1852; baptized April 3, 1852. This daughter survived two months and died on April 8, 1852.
(11) Sarah Anne Born c1853; baptized on August 14, 1853. She married W. H. Mather on December 25, 1877 in Chatham. Born c1853, William was the son of Robert and Helen Mather. Sarah died in New Jersey, U.S.A. in 1897. This family was Methodist.
