Notes:
1. William’s birth date on the cemetery stone does not coincide with census records and the death record.
2. According to the 1861 census, William’s wife was identified as Elspeth, aged 25; however, no marriage for this couple has been found. The only Elspeth aged 15 found in Newcastle Parish in 1851 was the daughter of Walter Johnstone and Mary Harvey.
3. Doreen Menzies Arbuckle, author of The Northwest Miramichi, identifies the mother of William born 1855 as Elspeth Baisley. Perhaps this is deduced from the 1861 census. W. D. Hamilton, author of Old North Esk on the Miramichi, identifies William’s mother as Nancy and indicates only two wives – Nancy and Alice.
