MCLEAN, WILLIAM ALLEN: was born 1819 in Guysborough, NS and died 20 October 1899 in Whitney, NB. He married Margaret Sloane on 23 December 1852 in North Esk, NB. She was born 1837 in Nova Scotia and died 19 October 1892 in Whitney, NB.
According to family tradition William’s ancestor (possibly grandfather was a retired sea captain known as Sea Wolf who came to Pictou, NS from the Firth of Mull. After marrying, William and Margaret settled in Allison’s Settlement, North Esk Parish, and there they raised their family. They are buried in St. Philip’s UC Cemetery in Whitney.

Elizabeth Ann, born 21 November 1855, Whitney, died 3 December 1937 in Tacoma, WA, USA. She may have been the Elizabeth who married James Murdock on 17 October 1881 at St. Andrew’s Anglican, Newcastle. A niece stated that Aunt Elizabeth’s husband was John Moran, and this is confirmed by her obit where she is listed as the widow of John Joseph Moran, survived by brothers Melvin and Gordon McLean, as well as a daughter, Mrs. Helen Heiter, all of Tacoma, WA.
Mary Jane, born about 1857, Whitney, died before May 1944. She married William Atkins and believed to have lived in New England.
Mariah Melinda, born July 1861, Whitney died 30 June 1903 in Menominee, MI, USA. She married Benjamin Jerome Hubbard, son of Joseph Hubbard and Mary Doherty, on 24 December 1880 in No Co. He was born 10 April 1856, Red Bank and died 21 July 1926, Aberdeen, WA, USA. Mariah died of TB while the family was living in MI. Benjamin eventually moved to the Aberdeen-Hoquiam area of Washington and worked in the logging industry there. Mariah and Benjamin had five children.
Charlotte, born about 1862, Whitney, died before December 1937. She married John Whitney of North Esk on 4 September 1883. A second marriage was found for Charlotte, where her surname is “Blue”, parents William and Margaret McLean of Whitney, to J. Stanley White, on 24 November 1897 in Newcastle. This confirms with her niece stating Aunt Lottie was married to Stanley White. It is believed she lived somewhere in the USA.
Cyrus Everett, born 4 March 1865, Whitney, died 31 October 1936, Hoquiam, WA, USA. He married Margaret Keating Jones on 29 March 1892, Newcastle. She was born 2 June 1877, Strathadam and died 28 November 1955 in Hoquiam, WA, USA. They had four children.
William James, born 15 November 1867, Whitney, died 1 May 1944, Newcastle. He married Agatha Estella Forsyth on 19 April 1921 in Whitney. She was born about 1879 in Blissfield and died after 1944. They had one child.
Addington, born 30 July 1870, Whitney, died 28 August 1955, Whitney. He married Mary Ella McAllister on 24 September 1897 in Red Bank. She was born 25 June 1875, South Esk, died 1953 in Whitney. They adopted Ella’s niece, but had no children of their own. Addington and Ella are buried in St. Philip’s UC Cemetery, Whitney.
Gordon McGregor, born 22 February 1873, Whitney, died 9 April 1955 in Aberdeen, WA, USA. Gordon never married.
Loran James, born about 1874, Whitney, died 5 October 1957, Chelmsford, NB. He married Ellen Lucy Hallihan on 9 April 1902 in Newcastle. She was born about 1875, Blackville and died 9 February 1963, Chelmsford. Loran is buried in St. Philip’s UC Cemetery, Whitney and Ellen is buried in St. Edward’s RC Cemetery, Chelmsford. They had eight children.
Blanche Erene, born 9 February 1878, Whitney died 20 January 1950 in Los Angeles, CA, USA. She married 1st Ernest Leslie, 2nd Charles Rentz.
Lillian Grace, born 8 February 1878, Whitney, died 16 May 1920, Lower Derby, after giving birth to her fourth child, who also died. She married Richard Allan Clouston on 1 October 1902 in Red Bank. He was born 13 April 1874, (1901 Census 1875, headstone 1873) Lower Derby and died 12 November 1952 in Newcastle. Lillian and Richard are buried in Ferguson Presbyterian Cemetery, Millerton.
Melvin Charles, born 7 September 1880, Whitney/Newcastle died 22 March 1946 in Tacoma, WA, USA. He married Inez Bernice Howd on 26 November 1911, in Monroe, Snohomish Co, WA, USA. She was born 7 April 1893, Havre, MT, USA and died 7 September 1975 in Newport News, VA, USA. He was a railroader. Melvin and Inez had four children.
