French Missionaries from Quebec were ministering to the French Acadiens in what is now Northumberland County from the early 18th Century.At some point a Roman Catholic church existed on Beaubear’s, but was destroyed by the British in and around the time of the Seven Year’s War. Over 1000 Acadians are supposedly buried at Wilson’sPoint in a mass grave. Acadians may also be buried on Beaubear’s. Around 1837 Beaubear’s Island was purchased by Joseph Russell from John Fraser. Russell did not move to the island until 1846. He and his family had converted to Mormonism about 1840 and had a chapel in his home and was the presiding Elder over the Church of the Latter Day Saints here. He built a tomb near his home on the island and brought the bodies of six of his nine children there. In 1849 his son Thomas died and was entombed on the island as well.<br /> <br /> This Island is presently a Canada National Park.<br /> http://www.pc.gc.ca/lhn-nhs/nb/boishebert/index_e.asp<br /> Local operators conduct tours of the Island in the summer season.<br /> http://www.beaubearsisland.ca/
