Wesley United Church in Trout Brook, started by Dame Mary Shaddick, who came from England in 1830, began as a Methodist Church. Mary and her fellow worshippers were holding Sunday morning prayers for five years before a Methodist minister (Samuel Rice) form Chatham visited the community and found “a people prepared for the Lord”.<br /> <br /> In the 19th Century the first church built was of logs. The second church, a frame one, built adjacent to the cemetery, was dedicated in June of 1920.<br /> <br /> In 1926 this Methodist Church voted to become a United Church. Since that time, it, along with the Whitney United Church has been part of the St. Stephen’s United Church charge.
