As early as the 1950’s, under the sponsorship of the Newcastle United Baptist Church, weekly prayer meetings and Bible study were held in the Chatham Natural Museum, but it wasn’t until 1967, when Rev. Lew Farrell came to Newcastle that planning began to establish a permanent place of worship for Baptists in Chatham. Services were held at the Chatham High auditorium (now Ian Baille) and St. Andrew’s Church Hall.<br /> <br /> Land was bought on Wellington Street from Henry Wilson and a Mr. Tozer of Bathurst and ground for the new church was broken on September 28, 1974. Before the church could be built, St. Andrew’s church hall burned, and the Baptist Congregation moved into the basement of the church being built. Thus the Bible Baptist Church came into being.<br /> <br /> The church held its official opening May 22, 1977. This church was renamed the Wellington Street Baptist Church in the 1990’s.<br /> <br />
