Paragraph that details some of the information about this church.
n the early years of this area Chatham was served by visiting clergy – French, Morriset, Cooke. Dollard, Egan. By approximately 1838 plans were made for a more permanent ministery. St. Michael the Archangel chapel was built and opened for worship on March 17, 1839. This chapel was erected where St. Michael’s school stands on University Ave. today.
It was still the RC Church of Chatham when the Diocese of Chatham was created in 1860 (1st Bishop James Rogers), and the church was raised to the status of Cathedral at that time. The Cathedral, along with the Bishop’s residence and a college, were lost to fire in February 1878. A second St. Michael’s, another wooden structure, was built after the fire.
Bishop Rogers began plans for the erection of a new cathedral, a structure of stone, but by the time of his death in 1903 his dream had not been realized. It was the next bishop, Thomas F. Barry, who is credited with its construction.
St. Michael’s lost its status as Cathedral in 1938 when the then bishop, Patrice A. Chiasson, moved the seat to Bathurst. Later, through the efforts of Bishop J. Edward Troy, Bishop of Saint John, St, Michael’s became a minor basilica (1989). Today St. Michael’s Basilica ministers to the Catholics of Chatham as well as St. Margaret’s.
