Paragraph that details some of the information about this church.
Wilson’s Point was the site of the first Presbyterian Church on the Miramichi. Built in the 1790’s, this church brought Presbyterians from all over the Miramichi together for worship. Later people from Chatham traveled across the river to Moorefield until 1916 when a separate congregation was formed in Chatham.
In 1817 St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church was built. Fifteen years later secessionists in St. Andrew’s left this church to form another Presbyterian church – St. John’s. (A second St. John’s was built in 1902)
The St. Andrew’s church of 1817 eventually became too small for the congregation and in 1865 a new St. Andrew’s was built on Wellington St. where the St Andrew’s United Church stands today.
In 1921 the two Presbyterian churches, St. Andrew’s church and St. John’s church, united. In 1926 , a year after St. Andrew’s – St. John’s became a United Church, they were joined by St. Luke’s Methodist to form the United Church of Chatham, later renamed St. Andrew’s United. A number of Presbyterians wanted to remain Presbyterian and began holding services in the former Masonic Hall on the corner of Henderson and Duke St. Eventually they voted to continue as a Presbyterian Congregation in affiliation with the Presbyterian Church of Canada. This congregation joined with the Presbyterians of Newcastle to form one pastoral charge.
In 1932 this church bought the Snowball property on the corner of Wellington and King and the stable, carriage barn was converted into a church hall and a place of worship. The church members moved into this church on March 1, 1933. Also in 1933 the name CALVIN was chosen as the name of the church. In 1949 the Calvin church left the Newcastle – Chatham pastoral charge and joined with Kouchibouquac and Black River Bridge.
