There were people of the Jewish faith on the Miramichi as early as 1820, but Jewish people in any number came only in the 1890’s. The first Jewish service was held here in 1894 on the second floor of the Golden Ball Building, Water Street, Chatham.<br /> <br /> In 1907 a Jewish synagogue was built on Water Street (near King Street). The synagogue was Orthodox and is believed to be one of the oldest synagogues in the Maritimes.<br /> <br /> In the 1940’s there were approximately thirty Jewish families on the Miramichi, but that number began to dwindle and eventually the synagogue was sold in 1970 to Leslie Glazier, who in 1971 sold it to Stephen Quinn. Because of the disrepair of the building, it was torn down by the Quinns the same year.<br /> <br /> Rabbis at the Chatham synagogue were usually young men just beginning their careers; they stayed only six to seven months.<br /> <br />
