Paragraph that details some of the information about this church.
The Roman Catholic Church of Rogersville is St Francois de Sales, a Gothic Revival style church begun in 1888. Before that, travelling missionaries conducted services in homes or in the small chapel built in the 1870’s.
The area known as Rogersville came into existence when the Intercolonial Railway was built and Acadians from PEI, Quebec and Richibucto were brought into the area to work. The first resident priest arrived in 1880 and remained a year. In 1881 Rev Marcel-Francois Richard was sent to minister to these Acadians. It was he who built the church; he remained in Rogersville until his death in 1915.
Under Rev. Richard, Rogersville became a center of religious activity. Richard was responsible for the founding of fourteen churches in the area, the erecting of the Assumption Monument next to St Francois de Sales and the building of a convent in Collette. He also brought to Rogersville from France two monasteries – the Abbey of the Assumption for woman and Our Lady of Calvary Abbey for men.
St Francois de Sales remains the Roman Catholic church of Rogersville – the same building erected in 1888, except for an addition in 1904 as well as renovations to the exterior and interior and 1956 between 1954.
