Church history

Paragraph that details some of the information about this church.
In 1904 nineteen Trappistine nuns journeyed from Vaise, France, to Rogersville, NB, to found a new monastery. Anticlerical laws at this time in France made it impossible to remain where they were; an invitation from Father Marcel-Francois Richard to come to Rogersville was accepted.
On June 6, 1904 they moved into their new home, a farm house on the McCaie property they had purchased. In 1922 a chapel was built and in 1927 the priory, as it was now called, was raised to an abbey. The first abbess was mother Josephe Bariault who remained abbess until 1939; she served again from 1948-1960.
These nuns had many struggles in the early years but they persevered. They attracted many women to their abbey from the area, from throughtout NB, Canada and the USA.
The abbey, as we see it today, was built in 1950 and the woman’s retreat house in 1970.
