<br /> The Church of Latter Day Saints began in New York in 1830, and soon thereafter missionaries came to Canada, first to Upper Canada and Alberta and then to NB in 1833-36. Conversions were very slow in NB so in the 1850’s most of the converts left for Utah. Few of the 418 who left NB reached their destination because of cholera and other illnesses.<br /> On the Miramichi, Joseph Russell, the well-known shipbuilder and business man, and his family converted to Mormonism in 1840 or 1841. Later Russell sold his shipbuilding business on Beaubear’s Island and moved to Utah. He is credited with helping to save the fledgeling church with monetary gifts from the sale of his property.<br /> Today on the Miramichi there is a Latter Day Saints’ Church on Big Ferry Road, but Miramichi is technically not a Mormon Church. Bathurst is the center of the church for the area and missionaries are sent, usually, from Bathurst<br />
