Church history

Paragraph that details some of the information about this church.
Before 1914 the people of Bridgetown (in the Westerly part of the former town of Newcastle) went to church at St. Mary’s, Newcastle, either by foot or by horse and wagon. The pastor at St. Mary’s at the time, Rev. Patrick Dixon, felt a church was needed for the people of the Bridgetown area, so fundraising began resulting in the building of a small church on land donated by the Schultz family. (It should be noted that in 1914 when St. Theresa’s was built, it was in the Red Bank parish. It was transferred to St. Mary’s Parish in 1915.) Approximately 70 years after construction St. Mary’s felt the upkeep of St. Theresa’s was becoming too expensive. It was decided to sell the church building and land to the adjoining business, Repap Enterprises. St. Theresa’s was torn down and the land became part of the Repap, now UPM, holdings.
