Paragraph that details some of the information about this church.
The parish of St. Mary’s was established in 1862. After years of immigration into this region, a need was seen to build a RC Church in Newcastle. Before 1862, Catholics in the area were ministered to by the priests at Bartibogue and Nelson. The first church built was on Prince William St.(now Newcastle Blvd.) between the area of today’s railway track and the former rectory and had a capacity of 450. This church served the congregation adequately until the 1930’s and the 1940’s when population growth made a larger church necessary.
During the pastorate or Rev. Raymond Hickey (1954-1963), the new St. Mary’s building was erected, blessed and opened on Dec. 4, 1956. This church could house 1300 people and could take care of the needs of the approximate 1000 families in the parish. The building of the French Cultural Center in 1986 and the subsequent holding of church services in the French language there saw the growth of a “French Church” of 300-350 people; most of these were former parishioners of St. Mary’s. Over the years St. Mary’s was more than a church for Newcastle Catholics. It has also been the mother church for mission churches – St. Theresa’s, Bridgetown; St. Samuel’s, Douglastown; St. Joachim’s, Eelground. St. Joachim’s remains a mission church to this day.
