Paragraph that details some of the information about this church.
St. Andrew’s Anglican Church was built in1849 and consecrated in1850, but Anglican services were held in Newcastle as early as 1818 when conducted at the Old Court House by a visiting missionary. These continued until 1823 when St. Paul’s Anglican in Bushville was built to serve the two adjoining towns of Chatham and Newcastle.
Anglicans in Newcastle, after 1825, began to plan for a church of their own and the dream became a reality under the guidance of Rev. James Hudson who came to the Miramichi as an assistant to the first Rector of St. Paul’s (Rev. S. Bacon) and later became a traveling missionary.
St. Andrew’s church was designed by the architect, Frank Mills, brought from England. The windows, furnishings, the first pipe organ, communion plates, candle sticks - all came from the British Isles. Over the years renovations, including an extension to the Vestry, have been made to the the church. In 1922 a memorial Baptistry was added. Otherwise the church is much the same as when originally built.
