The Salvation Army was organized in Newcastle in August of 1886 by Commissioner Thomas Coombs’ home. Meetings were held for the first years after 1886. The first meeting hall was the Masonic Hall (it later became the Shop-Rite Food Market). Only later did the Pleasant Street hall become the Salvation Army home. When the former William Gremley house was purchased, the Citadel was built and officially opened in 1891.<br /> <br /> In the early years Salvation Army soldiers were a common sight on the street corners of the area with their music and song. Familiar sights were their Christmas Cheer Kettles, their Christmas hampers and disaster relief.<br /> <br /> Salvationists continued to be a part of the Newcastle scene until the 1990’s when their numbers had become so low that it was decided to close the Citadel, and the Newcastle Salvation Army flag was retired on September 10, 1995. The building was sold to the Seventh Day Adventists in 2003. The Adventists in 2008 sold the building to Jean Coutu, and it has since been torn down.<br /> <br /> The Salvation Army continues to have a presence in Miramichi through their Thrift Shop and their various charities.<br /> <br /> There were very few records for the Salvation Army in Newcastle before the 1930’s; thus, the list of Corps officers is mostly from the period since 1930.<br /> <br />
